WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

Matthew 4:19, “He (Jesus) said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men’

There are three keys we find in discipleship here:

  • 1.    Follow me: Obedience
  • 2.    I will make you: Life change
  • 3.    Fishers of men: Mission

So we believe that by working with the Holy Spirit discipleship initiates self-paced obedience and accountability which brings about life change and ultimately finds its way into mission.

WHY DISCIPLESHIP?

It’s not our idea but is Jesus’ idea. He tells us in the great commission to, “… go into the world and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). Ultimately becoming disciples and making disciples is God’s strategy for reaching the world. Discipleship done right empowers ordinary everyday people to take the mission of Jesus to the world.

WHAT DOES A DISCIPLESHIP GROUP LOOK LIKE?

Discipleship comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They may be known as huddles, ‘my friends’ groups, Discipleship Bible Study (DBS) groups or other names. In any form discipleship groups will have an emphasis on:

  • Challenge: More than just knowing more, the point is self-paced growth evidenced by growth in character and skills.
  • Practical: Real growth happens outside the meeting.
  • Accountability: You keep yourself accountable to what you said you would do.
  • Low control: You decide what you will do. Two questions you will often get asked a. What is God saying to me? b. What am I going to do about it?
  • Missional purpose: You should only enter a group if you are willing to either run a discipleship group yourself and/or engage in mission.
  • Normally 4-10 people
  • Regular and consistent in its rhythm of meeting. It is a priority.
  • For a season only, not forever. Normally around 2 years.
  • Something that reproduces over time, as members start their own discipleship group.
